The tongue carries a mighty power; blessings or curses both emanate from man’s lips. I find the book of James quite revealing on this topic. It truly shows the importance of silence. More importantly, it shows the type of influence a voice can exert.
Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go
Regardless of the rudder’s size, it has the capacity to direct a ship’s course. The same applies to the tongue. It is untamable. James goes to greater lengths to portray man’s relentless pursuit to tame animals, yet he cannot control what utters of his mouth.
With the tongue, we praise our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness
I am convinced that this was his call to peace and compassion. When people wrong you, you are not supposed to condescend to that level. Let those harsh words simmer out, for they will surely render on back to who uttered them. We need not seek revenge or return the favor. That person will surely reap what he sowed. So, why not sow words of life, faith, hope, and love?
Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness
As God’s children, we are supposed to bear fruit of a good life by our humility and partaking in the heavenly wisdom of the Holy Spirit. James explicitly tells us what it’s supposed to look like:
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure: peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere
Nowadays, we’re so quick to point fingers and judge others, when in reality, we also deep insecurities that we are ashamed of. Let’s learn to be considerate of others. Let’s bring a sense of goodwill towards each other.
